Ranking is only half the job. We covered the SEO side of this in SEO for Landscapers & Gardeners: Seasonal Search Spikes — but getting a homeowner to click your result is wasted if the site they land on doesn’t convert. Most landscaping and gardening websites are a stock template with a photo gallery bolted on, and they leak enquiries because of it. Here’s what the site itself actually needs.
Structure for your service area, not just your business
Landscapers and gardeners serve a radius, not a postcode. If your site is one homepage plus an “About” and “Contact” page, you’re invisible to the “[service] near [town]” searches from every town in your patch except the one you’re based in. Dedicated local area pages — one per town you actually cover — is the single biggest structural gap on most trade sites we look at.
Split design work from maintenance work on the page, not just in your head
The same intent split that matters for SEO matters for conversion. A homeowner planning a full garden redesign wants to see a portfolio, pricing signals, and a design process. A homeowner wanting their lawn mowed fortnightly wants to see a simple service list and a way to book recurring work. Cramming both into one generic “Services” page makes both visitors work harder to find what they came for — and trade customers don’t browse, they bounce.
Photos need to load instantly, not eventually
This is a visual trade — before/after photos are doing more selling than your copy ever will. That’s also exactly why photo-heavy trade sites are so exposed on Core Web Vitals: images are the Largest Contentful Paint element on 85.3% of desktop pages and 76% of mobile pages, according to HTTP Archive’s 2025 Web Almanac — so on a gallery-heavy landscaping site, your hero or gallery photo is almost certainly the single biggest factor in your page speed score. The fix isn’t fewer photos, it’s a site built to serve them properly:
- Optimised formats (WebP or AVIF, not raw JPEG/PNG exports from a phone)
- The hero/above-the-fold image loads immediately — never lazy-loaded
- Every other gallery image loads lazily, only as the visitor scrolls to it
- No bloated page-builder plugin sitting on top of the gallery doing the resizing client-side
A contact path that matches how the enquiry actually happens
Someone deciding between three quotes on their phone isn’t going to fill in a five-field form with a dropdown menu. A short form, a visible phone number, and a clear “we cover your area” signal near the top of the page reduce the friction between “I like this business” and “I’ve sent the enquiry.”
Built to be trusted before the call
Schema markup, a real Google Business Profile connection, and genuine (not stock) photos of your actual work all feed the same signal: this is a real, established local business. That’s true for both Google’s ranking algorithm and the homeowner reading the page before they pick up the phone.
What this looks like in practice
This is exactly the structure we build into every pay-monthly website and full custom trade website — local area pages, fast image handling, and a contact path built around how trade enquiries actually happen.
